PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The four prints, installed in the lobby of the Dr. Kiran C. Patel Center for Global Solutions on the Tampa campus, reflect the facility’s research programs and mission to promote sustainable, healthy communities. Selected from the 20 floating worlds in Nelson’s Future Memories series, the images are digitally composed from hundreds of photographs, creating transcendental landscapes which hover between reality and the imagined, revealing both the diversity of the local and the fragility of the global.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Catherine Nelson (b. Sydney, 1970) completed her art education at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney and then moved quickly into the world of film and television, creating visual effects for films such as Moulin Rouge, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, 300, and Australia. Her job has taken her around the world having lived and worked in Milan, London, Rome, Reykjavik, Bratislava, Brussels and throughout Australia.

In 2008 she returned to her studio and began to dedicate her time to her own art practice. With the eye and training of a painter and years of experience in visual effects in the film industry, Nelson began creating meticulously composed images with thousands of assembled details shifting between reality and the imagined. Visual poetry, nature photography and digital techniques blend together to give shape to these transcendental landscapes. The result is a contemporary pictorial mythology that subtly reminds the viewer of a profound truth: that it is in the flourishing variety of the local that the fate of the world resides.

Nelson’s work has been acquired by the City of Sydney, Artbank Australia, Australia Club, Morgan Stanley New York, among other private collections in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the US.
