Alfred Leslie
Painter Alfred Leslie, at one time an abstract expressionist painter, completed his first realist work, the film Pull My Daisy, in 1959. In the 1970s he produced a series of narrative works about everyday people and events. The large scale and dramatic lighting lent a heroic quality to the pictures.
Folded Constance Pregnant, Leslie's first published etching, portrays his wife in one of her pregnancies. Roughly nine by six feet, the print is far larger than any etching press at Graphicstudio. To accommodate the image, Leslie made three separate copper plates, and the paper was folded twice, to go through the press three times.
